How requests work
We assign one partner per service in each area. None is assigned for this service in Los Angeles yet, so a request comes to our team and we contact you about next steps. It is never resold.
You can also browse other listed qualifying companies. Directory listings do not grant a partner slot or change where a TrustedLocals request is routed.
Partners pay for an exclusive TrustedLocals request-routing slot for their service and area. Payment does not change source ratings.
Leaks, repairs and replacement
An active leak needs a temporary cover first. A tarp or emergency patch stops the water while the repair is planned, and a company that insists on a full replacement before stopping the leak has its priorities wrong.
Read the full guide
A roof leak is not always a failure of the shingles or tiles themselves. Leaks often start at the details: the metal flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights, the valleys where two slopes meet, cracked rubber seals around pipes, and clogged gutters that push water back under the edge. A good inspection looks at those first, then at the covering, the waterproof underlayment beneath it and the wood deck beneath that. Ask for photos of what was found and a written scope that says why the recommended work is the right one.
Repair versus replacement comes down to age, extent and the layer underneath. Asphalt shingle roofs have a finite life. Concrete and clay tile lasts much longer, but the underlayment under it does not, and a leaking tile roof is often fixed by lifting the tiles, replacing the underlayment and flashing, and relaying the same tiles. Low-slope and flat roofs, common on mid-century homes and additions, fail at seams and drains and need their own materials and methods.
Re-roofing needs a building permit from your city's building department; in the City of Los Angeles that is the Department of Building and Safety, and the licensed contractor normally gets it. In the City of Los Angeles, a residential re-roof that replaces more than half the roof must use a cool roof product rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Elsewhere, California's energy code can require a cool roof depending on the roof type and climate zone. Homes in a High or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone must use a Class A fire-rated roof assembly under the state's wildland-urban interface code. A contractor who works here knows these rules; one who does not mention them is a warning sign.
Roofing contractors hold the C-39 classification from the Contractors State License Board, and California requires a roofing contractor to carry workers' compensation whether or not it has employees. Check the record at cslb.ca.gov for an active license, the bond and a workers' compensation policy rather than an exemption. Roofing is dangerous work, and if a company has no coverage and a worker is hurt on your property, the claim can land on you.
After a storm, be wary of anyone who knocks on the door offering a free inspection; the Contractors State License Board warns homeowners about this pattern after storms and fires. Never pay a large deposit up front: California law caps a home improvement down payment at $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less. A contract signed at your home can be canceled in writing within three business days, five if you are 65 or older, and seven if the work repairs damage from a declared disaster.

Common questions
What should I do about an active roof leak?
Catch the water inside with containers, move belongings away, and take photos. Stay off the roof, especially when it is wet. A roofing company can put a temporary cover over the damage until a repair is done.
Repair or replacement: how is that decided?
The company inspects the roof covering, the underlayment, the flashing and the decking, and considers the roof's age and how widespread the damage is. Ask for a written scope that says what was found and why they recommend the work.
Does roof work need a permit in Los Angeles?
Re-roofing and many structural repairs require a building permit. The licensed contractor doing the work normally pulls it. Ask about the permit before work starts.
How much can a roofer ask for as a deposit?
California law caps the down payment on a home improvement contract at $1,000 or 10 percent of the price, whichever is less. Progress payments follow the work, never run ahead of it.
What is a Class A roof and do I need one?
Class A is the highest fire rating for a roof assembly. The state's wildland-urban interface code requires it in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, which cover many hillside and foothill neighborhoods across Los Angeles County. The State Fire Marshal's zone map shows whether your address is in one; inside the City of Los Angeles the ZIMAS parcel report shows it too. Check the current map rather than an older report.
My tile roof leaks. Does the tile need replacing?
Often the tile itself is fine. Tile outlasts the underlayment beneath it, so a common repair lifts the tiles, replaces the underlayment and flashing, and relays the same tiles. In the City of Los Angeles that work still needs a permit, but the cool roof rule does not apply to it.
How does TrustedLocals choose a roofing partner for Los Angeles?
We list companies rated 4.5+ on Google and pick one partner per area. Google and Yelp ratings are shown separately from reviews of TrustedLocals jobs. Payment buys the routing slot, not a rating.
Where does my TrustedLocals request go?
It depends on your ZIP code. Where no partner is active for this service, a request comes to our team, and we contact you about next steps. Enter your ZIP code on the request form to see what applies to you. Your request is never put up for bids.
Can I browse other companies in a partner's area?
You can also browse other listed qualifying companies. Directory listings do not grant a partner slot or change where a TrustedLocals request is routed. Website and call links contact a business directly, outside TrustedLocals request routing.
Is there a fee to send a request?
No. Sending a request is free. You pay the company directly for the work, at the price they quote you.
What if something goes wrong?
