How requests work
We assign one partner per service in each area. None is assigned for this service in Los Angeles yet, so a request comes to our team and we contact you about next steps. It is never resold.
You can also browse other listed qualifying companies. Directory listings do not grant a partner slot or change where a TrustedLocals request is routed.
Partners pay for an exclusive TrustedLocals request-routing slot for their service and area. Payment does not change source ratings.
What happens after a fire
After a fire the damage comes in three layers: what burned, what the smoke reached, and what the water used to put the fire out soaked. Restoration deals with all three, and the order matters.

Nobody goes back in until the fire department or building department says the structure is safe to enter, and the electricity and gas stay off until they have been inspected. Openings are boarded up and the roof is tarped if it was breached. Water from firefighting is pumped out and the structure dried, because wet framing and drywall left for days become a mold problem on top of the fire.
Smoke travels through the whole home on heat and air currents and settles in rooms far from the fire, inside closets, ductwork and behind cabinets. The residue differs by what burned: a fast, hot fire leaves a dry, powdery soot, a smoldering fire leaves a wet, sticky residue that smears, and a kitchen fire leaves a nearly invisible protein film with a strong odor. Do not wipe walls or furniture yourself before the crew arrives. Each residue needs a different cleaning method, and the wrong one makes the stain permanent.
A home that did not burn can still be a fire job. Wildfire smoke and ash settle into attics, ducts, insulation and soft furnishings, and ash from burned structures can carry asbestos, heavy metals and other toxic residue. It is cleaned with wet methods, HEPA vacuums and respirators, never by dry sweeping or leaf blowers. Ask for a written scope that says what will be tested, what will be cleaned and how.
Contents that can be restored are often packed out, cleaned off site and stored until the home is ready. Odor is treated last, after the sources of the smell are gone, with air treatments such as fogging or ozone and by sealing surfaces that still hold odor. Ozone is run only in an empty house, with people, pets and plants out until it has aired, because it is harmful to breathe. Odor treatment on a home that has not been cleaned first does not last.
For insurance, the key document is the company's written scope: a list of what was damaged, what will be cleaned and what will be replaced. Keep the fire department report, photos from before anything was moved, and receipts for emergency costs. Standard homeowner policies include coverage for additional living expenses while the home cannot be lived in; ask your insurer what yours covers and keep every receipt. The California Department of Insurance takes complaints if a claim stalls.
Fire restoration needs a Contractors State License Board license for work worth $1,000 or more, or any work that needs a building permit. Rebuilding after a fire is general building work, and a company that only cleans may bring in a licensed builder for that part. Check the record at cslb.ca.gov, and ask which IICRC certifications the technicians hold.

Common questions
What does fire and smoke restoration involve?
The company secures the property, removes soot and damaged materials, cleans or restores contents that can be saved, treats smoke odor, and dries out any water left from firefighting. Smoke residue travels beyond the burned area, so rooms that look untouched are usually checked too.
Is it safe to go back into the home after a fire?
Only once the fire department says so. Soot and smoke residue can irritate the lungs and skin, and damaged structures can be unsafe. Wear protection if you must enter, and avoid turning on electrical systems until they are checked.
What should I do before the company arrives?
Call your insurer, take photos of the damage, and do not try to wipe soot from walls or fabrics, which can set the stain. Keep receipts for any emergency costs such as temporary housing.
Why do rooms that did not burn need cleaning?
Smoke travels on heat and air through the whole home and settles far from the fire, including inside ducts and closets. Residue left in those rooms keeps the odor and can corrode metal and electronics.
What is a pack-out?
A pack-out is when contents that can be saved are inventoried, packed, cleaned off site and stored until the home is ready. The inventory is also the record for the insurance claim.
Can the smell be removed completely?
Smoke odor goes when its sources go: soot cleaned, burned materials removed, ducts cleaned, and remaining surfaces treated or sealed. Odor treatment before cleaning does not last.
How does TrustedLocals choose a fire & smoke restoration partner for Los Angeles?
We list companies rated 4.5+ on Google and pick one partner per area. Google and Yelp ratings are shown separately from reviews of TrustedLocals jobs. Payment buys the routing slot, not a rating.
Where does my TrustedLocals request go?
It depends on your ZIP code. Where no partner is active for this service, a request comes to our team, and we contact you about next steps. Enter your ZIP code on the request form to see what applies to you. Your request is never put up for bids.
Can I browse other companies in a partner's area?
You can also browse other listed qualifying companies. Directory listings do not grant a partner slot or change where a TrustedLocals request is routed. Website and call links contact a business directly, outside TrustedLocals request routing.
Is there a fee to send a request?
No. Sending a request is free. You pay the company directly for the work, at the price they quote you.
What if something goes wrong?
